If you’ve been having trouble with the cellphone’s clunky text input system, take heart. Samsung’s has filed a patent application for a Virtual Display that enables one to input characters and drawings on a cellhpone via a virtual screen. The cellphone’s position detector will detect the electronic pen’s position and use a character recognition algorithm to differentiate between doodles and writing. The electronic pen communicates with the cellphone via an infrared or ultrasonic signal and everything is done in real time. Should the Virtual Screen take off, it will make the cellphone an alternative productivity tool to complement the Tablet PC and UMPC devices.
