LG looks like its in pole position to claim the world’s first Blu-ray Disc recorder that runs at 4x speeds. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support dual-layer, 50GB discs but only single-layer 25GB media. The LG GBW-H10N drive has been touted many times before this year, starting with the CES in Las Vegas this January. The drive will ship next month and is expected to retail at €799 ($1,020/£546). The GBW-H10N writes BD-R/BD-RE at 2x speeds and will run up to 4x for BD-R media only. It reads single-layer BD-ROM and BD-R discs at 4.8x, whittling down to 4x for dual-layer BD-ROMs and 2x for single-layer BD-REs. Other supported formats are CD-R/RW media, DVD-RAM discs and DVD±R/RWs.
