Helios HVD2085 HD Upscaling DVD Player

The Helios HVD2085 is the latest version of what was formally the NeuNeo HVD2085 (link to review) DVD Player. Its main added value is that it uses a dedicated processor to upscale (or magnify) the image resolution from Standard Definition (704×480) to High Definition (1280×720 to 1920×1080). The new Helios model supports more resolutions (480i and 576i), is built with better electronics components and has a few added features in the user interface. Additionally, it comes with an HDMI cable (which is usually fairly expensive) and a much better remote control.

During our tests, we estimated that the image quality was similar the NeuNeo model, which is good, but not the absolute best. This DVD player will work best for HD-ready televisions that are equipped with a poor upscaling chip: there are plenty of these in the current installed base.

We did not try to play foreign movies this time, but I would assume that the Helios HVD2085 is also region-free “out of the box”, like its predecessor. We said it earlier: the remote control has been upgraded and now has a “normal” layout of the VCR buttons. The previous one was confusing at best and won’t be missed. We’re glad that someone listens to user feedback.

To beat the image quality of this DVD player, we had to resort to using a Windows Media Center PC. While our MCE PC gave us the absolute best image, it is also much more expensive, so in the end, the HVD2085 probably wins in bang-for-the-buck. Finally, the price of this player actually went down from $245 in December to $199 at the time of publishing. Welcome to the world of consumer electronics.
