U.S. scientists at a weapons laboratory claim to have achieved a milestone by successfully training bees that are capable of sniffing out explosives, ushering a paradigm shift for U.S. homeland security and the Iraq war. These trained honeybees will use their proboscis to identify various substances like dynamite, C-4 plastic explosives, and even the Howitzer propellant grains which is widely used in Iraq. The program is known as the Stealthy Insect Sensor Project and took 18 months of research to come up with a successful example. Using bees will greatly diminish the risk of losing lives unnecessarily when searching for potential explosives in public places, but I fear this plan might be thwarted by terrorists placing random jars of honey all over as a diversion.
