Cory Ondrejk, Linden Lab’s CTO, spoke about Second Life’s success at the Churchill Club the other day. Second Life is a 3D virtual world where you can live using an avatar. The user can register for free and decide to buy a piece of this virtual land. Over 1500 education institutions are now registered in Second Life, providing virtual classes, and I was surprised to learn that, in some cases, students prefer to attend the virtual class where they feel more comfortable asking questions.
Another neat project going on in there is the Space Museum, created by a bunch of rocket scientists during their free time. A lot of people make a living doing business in Second Life, like this fashion designer who sells virtual clothes or Ailin Graef, nicknamed the Virtual Rockefeller by Business 2.0, who owns a very lucrative real estate business in the 3D world.
