Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has collaborated with Burton Inc. and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the first all-electronic TV by using a 3D projector which is capable of generating moving images in mid-air. This 3D projector utilizes focused laser beams to create flashpoint “pixels” in mid-air, where the phonomenon known as plasma emission sparks to life in order to create a 3D image that gives the appearance of floating in empty space. Does this herald 3DTV in our living rooms? Not just yet, as it took more than 80 years to reach where we are today, so be prepared to wait for a long time more. Reminds me of Princess Leia’s plea to Obi-Wan back in Episode IV of Star Wars…
