Toshiba’s new gigabeat U Series of MP3 players aren’t exactly ground breaking, and yet they haven’t done too badly in the market either. This new U Series come with just 2GB of flash memory, a departure from previous models that relied on hard drives as the storage medium of choice. It retails for $100, making it 33% cheaper than the 2GB iPod nano and offers easy navigation thanks to the PlusPad button. If you’re looking for an aesthetically pleasing MP3 player, you can forgo this new gigabeat, but at least the user interface is pretty much clean cut and offers FM and line-in recording to boot. This is a very viable alternative for those who don’t mind sacrificing aesthetics for functionality.
