Intel is reportedly going to add flash drives into servers, starting with a modest 32GB next year. Obviously, capacity is going to grow steadily to 64GB and 128GB from there.
Flash drives have many benefits, but the one that server managers might like the most is lower power consumption. This is becoming a real problem for companies that have extensive server farms because in many places, the backup power capacity is just too low, making it useless in case of a power outage.
Finally, Intel has a vested interest in pushing Flash memory because it’s a high-density semi-conductor, a field where Intel’s more advanced chip-making capabilities will give them an edge.
