Looks like the humble
has just turned 25, thanks to a stroke of genius (or should that be three) by Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman. The smiley has spawned numerous emoticons throughout the two decades, and you even have localized smileys that are read in different ways. Needless to say, ASCII art is an offshoot and natural progression from the smiley, but I guess the Internet would not have been the same without these cute little critters floating around in emails and forums. What’s your favorite smiley?
