Samsung will be showcasing its new LCD display that derives its backlighting from white LEDs at the Flat Panel Display International show in Yokohama, Japan, next week. This 15.4″ LCD display might look pretty ordinary on the outside, but its innards are teeming with state-of-the-art technology, allowing it to consume 40% less power than screens lit with normal, colored LEDs while boasting a contrast ratio of 10,000 to 1. Not only that, the use of white LED backlighting illuminates only the parts of the screen that actually need it, letting dark areas have their lighting turned off altogether. This new display will enter production in the first half of next year, where it will be available in consumer products during the second half of 2008.
