AMD has stated that it will focus on putting multiple GPUs on a single card as a way to scale the performance of high-end graphics offering. The first product will be called Radeon HD 3870 X2 – note how the “X2” term has been nicely borrowed from the CPU line. I like it.
The idea is interesting although not new: 3Dfx (RIP) used to put multiple Voodoo chips on a single board. What this really tells us, is that the current single GPU Architecture of AMD is not competitive enough, and if they can’t win with a single chip, it means trouble.
