[CES 2008] The Bel Canto ULTRA-DOCK aims to wring the most performance out from your iPod by using Sonic Focus technology to upscale and refine compressed music and soundtracks to 7.1 channel/96kHz/24-bit quality. This technology claims to circumvent the problem faced by other iPod docks that use the iPod as a content source, as audio fidelity is degraded whenever music files are compressed. The ULTRA-DOCK claims to work by turning stereo audio to a lifelike 7.1 surround sound while re-creating nuances and subtleties of the original performance which are normally lost in data compression, although I would take that claim with a pinch of salt. No matter how good a technology is, you can only do so much with stereo audio as the source. It looks sweet though, and would make a great coffee table decoration once you’ve decided to drop $1,995 for it.
