No Li-Ion Batteries Allowed in Checked Luggage Anymore

To reduce the risk of batteries catching on fire, the US Transportation department is now requiring that batteries in checked bags be stored in a plastic bag. This applies only for batteries that are not installed in a device. This new regulation came into effect yesterday.

“Doing something as simple as keeping a spare battery in its original retail packaging or a plastic zip-lock bag will prevent unintentional short-circuiting and fires,” Krista Edwards, deputy administrator of the PHMSA.
