Global Lighting Technologies (GLT) has chanced upon a new LED-based backlight that will be used in keyboards, ensuring brightness and uniformity while reducing the amount of LEDs used. This is vital as manufacturing costs will be reduced along with power consumption while providing a similar level of performance to the end user. I guess gaming peripheral companies like Razer and Logitech will sit up and take notice, considering both of them make keyboards with backlighting for that “cool” factor. These LEDs will be side-firing, allowing them to be located on the edge of the light guide although there are cases where the LEDs are placed in the middle of the backlight according to the surrounding geometry.
