Thorrn Micro Technologies’ engineering team has just developed a solid state fan that targets portable gadgets, as it is 1/4 the size and 2 to 3 times more powerful than a comparable mechanical fan. Dubbed the RSD5 fan, this microchip-sized fan touts the following features – quiet, thin, and powerful enough to keep a 25-watt processor cool. It utilizes the same principles and technology as ionic air purifier, generating a breeze simply by using an electric current. Compared to a mechanical fan for portable electronics that does 0.7 to 1.7 meters per second of wind speed, the RSD5 is more powerful with wind speeds of up to 2.7 meters per second. If this technology manages to take off on a large scale, expect to see self-cooling processors appear sometime down the road.
