A high ranking executive from Samsung predicts that production of AMOLED panels will finally reach mainstream levels next year, and could possibly begin the long road in replacing (or should I say, displacing) stalwarts such as plasma or LCD. After all, AMOLED does have higher contrast, response, wider viewing angles and a longer battery life. The main drawback to date has been production costs, as AMOLED is only cost effective for smaller displays found on cell phones and portable media players. Samsung is poised to hit the economy of scale (production capacity of 3 million units) in 2009, so hopefully we’ll be able to get AMOLED HDTVs in 2010 and beyond.
