Most motorcyclists fear being knocked down by car drivers who aren’t paying attention, which is why this special airbag system from Autoliv ought to be very welcome by all road users. Mounted in the A-pillar of the car, the airbag will inflate whenever a front end impact is detected, covering majority of the hood as well as some of the windshield. The Dutch Cycling Federation estimates that more than 60 lives could be saved and over 1,500 serious injuries could be avoided every year by using these airbags. I suppose cyclists and pedestrians will welcome such an airbag as well, but what happens in a fender bender where you kiss another vehicle’s behind? The airbag will surely inflate too, no? There is no word on when the system will be installed nor how much it costs.
