ElectraTherm recently installed a 50-kilowatt machine that uses industrial waste heat as its “fuel”, offering yet another avenue for green energy. Dubbed the ElectraTherm Green Machine, this unit is able to save you enough in recouping its purchase cost within three to four years, since electricity costs approximately three or four cents per kilowatt-hour during that time. An organic Rankine cycle is used to hear liquids that are then transformed into a vapor, which in turn will move the turbine to generate electricity. The ElectraTherm Green Machine is proof that heat-to-electricity can be successful on a relatively small scale, capable of powering up to 40 homes simultaneously.
