It is proven yet again that Metal Gear Solid is a hardware mover, placing the PS3 at the top of the Japanese hardware sales charts (albeit for just a week) for the first time since the PS3 was released. Of course, things returned to normalcy this week as the PS3 dutifully took its place under the PSP, Wii and DS sales figures, settling comfortably at the 20,000 unit level. I suppose the effect will taper off in the next few weeks as the PS3 returns to the 10k sales figures, outpacing the Xbox 360 by a far margin, but having plenty of catch up to do with Nintendo.
