Panasonic has scored another first with its new Blu-ray discs that boast 6x writing speed, and these new optical media will be released in Japan next month. There will be two versions available – the 25GB (LM-BR25MD) and 50 GB (LM-BR50MD), featuring a maximum data transfer speed of 216Mbps. That figure, according to Panasonic, is roughly 20% faster than the current transfer speed of 16x DVD-R discs. The 25GB and 50GB discs will retail for $16 and $37, respectively. Of course, what’s the introduction of new discs without new compatible Blu-ray drives? A new range will also hit Japan sometime this September, so it is time to start saving up all those yen.
