It is interesting to note that despite the iPhone 3G carrying much less features compared to other high end handsets in Japan, interest in it has surged to unprecedented levels, as more than one in seven Japanese phone customers are mulling over an iPhone 3G purchase since it was launched. Research has shown that existing subscribers with SoftBank (the official iPhone carrier) are more likely to lust after the device, while 20% of the others are willing to pick one up while 10% are considering whether it would be well worth the carrier switch just for the iPhone 3G itself. This is in stark contrast (and a pleasant surprise for Cupertino) since it was reported in an earlier survey that most Japanese don’t want the iPhone 3G.
