Audi has a brand new Traffic Light Detection System known as Travolution. It is self-explanatory, helping improve the synchronization and phasing of traffic light networks in order to reduce stopping times while dramatically reducing the number of actual stops required thanks to a communications link between cars and the traffic light network. Each traffic light will come with a communication module that sends messages to cars in the area, alerting them of the time left before it turns green, where the vehicle’s onboard system will take over and calculate the speed the driver ought to maintain to pass through the light during its green phase. Somewhat like the naked road concept IMHO – but these people could take a leaf out of Vietnam’s human-powered smooth traffic system.
