
ICO Global Communications and Qualcomm have teamed up to work on new chips which would see a future of combined cellular/satellite phones. This technology will be incorporated into new baseband chips for use in cell phones, enabling both cellular networks and satellite networks being utilized for voice services. These chips will roll out by 2010 at the latest to be incorporated into regular handsets, so it is imperative that Qualcomm and its partner do their part to achieve economies of scale if this is to take off.
