Hitachi does manufacture hard drives just in case you thought all they did were just home appliances, and their latest Travelstar 5K500.B loves the environment, featuring up to 500GB of storage space while sipping a mere 1.4W of power during both read and write operations. The drives are also halogen-free, which makes them even friendlier to the environment. Other features include optional Bulk Data Encryption which will encrypt everything that is stored on the drive, decrypting information only as and when required. There will be two types of this 5400RPM drive available – a normal version and an enhanced availability version, with the former shipping this December while the latter being released at the end of Q1 2009.
