A wheel is a wheel, right? Not if Michelin has anything to say about it – its Active Wheel comes with a built-in electric engine within, is touted to free up space in the front or rear of the vehicle. In addition, it also helps reduce the need for space hogs including transmissions and exhaust systems, and designers always love more room to work around with so that they can see jaws drop on the showfloor when their vehicle is unveiled for the first time. The inclusion of an electric engine within the wheel itself is said to lower the cost of electric vehicles if the idea catches on, and chances are pretty good you’ll also save money (and the environment) in the long run.
