Omron has successfully developed a backlight for LCDs which consume way less power compared to conventional backlights. Most existing 32″ LCD TVs rely on 10 cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs), but Omron managed to think out of the box to achieve maximum performance at approximately 50°C, relying on heat storing resin sheets that help maintain the same level of brightness even though the number of CCFLs have been reduced. This new technology will be marketed to LCD TV manufacturers from next year onwards.
