Footsteps Power Lights

Fancy the Japanese being way ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to keeping the earth green. The Shibuya train at Tokyo is equipped with a special installation for Christmas, relying on pedestrians’ footsteps to generate electricity. This is made possible courtesy of a mat that relies on piezoelectric gadgetry, powering a LED display board and a small holiday lights display for the masses. Each time someone weighing 132lbs steps on the 35-inch square mat, approximately 0.5W of juice is generated. The total amount of foot power harvested will then be displayed on an LED wall for your satisfaction in knowing you’ve done your part to save the world for today.
