LG Develops LTE 4G Chip

LG is first off the blocks when it comes to developing a chip for 4G-grade cellular access using Long Term Evolution (LTE) as its standard. This tiny 13mm square modem will definitely excite those living a mobile life, since it is able to fit into a cell phone while offering theoretical peak speeds of LTE, which could potentially touch a whopping 100Mbps downstream and 50Mbps for uploads, according to LG. So far, a testbed Windows Mobile device managed to touch bandwidth of 60Mbps down and 20Mbps up in a real-world example, leaving future users astounded with the possibilities of such a device. If we take peak speeds into consideration, that would mean downloading a 700MB video file in uder a minute – now how cool is that. Not only that, you can also stream a quartet of 1080p High Definition movies simultaneously without running into performance issues or skipped frames. Hopefully we’ll be able to see the first LTE-based phones shipping in a couple years’ time, coupled with a notebook adapter card.
