Seagate Technology, Western Digital and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies will be answering the clarion call to develop affordable 2.5″ hard drives that will find its place in netbooks and low-cost PCs next year, and the target price currently stands at a phenomenal 40-50% cheaper compared to existing 2.5″ entry-level models. This is great news, although we can expect a performance drop when it comes to the new models, but then again netbooks aren’t meant to be processing powerhouses in the first place, but more of a casual computing device that does all the basic computing tasks in a snap. We can expect to see the first of such low-cost hard drives for netbooks hitting the market sometime in the second half of next year, global recession or not.
