Sprint’s U300 USB modem is first off the blocks in the US that offer both 3G and 4G Internet device in a single solution, as it is able to access the recently launched Sprint WiMAX network while retaining full functionality with the older, original-spec EVDO network. While you are able to connect between 2Mbps and 4Mbps in the current 4G coverage area, real-life performance sees figures in the region of 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps. The U300 reportedly supports GPS mapping data on 3G portions of the network as well, featuring bundled software that auto-detects the fastest available connection. Too bad the Sprint U300 USB modem is compatible with Windows 2000 and later computers only, leaving Mac and Linux fans out in the cold. Shipping begins on December 21st, and it will retail for $150 alongside a 2-year contract and an $80 monthly plan to take advantage of both 3G and 4G networks.
