Remember TechCrunch and their low cost touchscreen Internet tablet project? Dubbed the CrunchPad, the prototype you see in the video above is getting very close to a release date from conception, and throughout its gestation period in the lab, it has managed to grow the following :-

  • 12″ 1,024 x 768 touchscreen display
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB internal memory
  • VIA Nano processor
  • Ubuntu Linux operating system
  • Webcam
  • Wi-Fi, USB and VGA connectivity

The CrunchPad is looking at a $299 or less price tag which should keep interested parties happy, and it even boasts support for Flash and other video codecs, enabling users to watch video from Hulu or join in on live video chats on web services. You will be able to get typing done via the on-screen keyboard, although touch typists might not be too happy at the lack of tactile feedback. Do you think a device like the CrunchPad will catch on with the masses, or is it just a niche product?
