Twitter, the microblogging service, has done what was unthinkable – surpass the market share of visits of Digg, the hit content aggregation site. This is one spot above Digg in Hitwise’s Computers and Internet category at number 84. Many people point towards last week’s US Airways crash in the Hudson as the event that edged Twitter past Digg, thanks to Twitter users’ reports of the event. A particular photograph of the plane that was posted to TwitPic.com was viewed more times than the server could handle, resulting in a temporary server crash. Is this a minor anomaly, or is Twitter going to move on to greater heights? Well, Twitter still can’t compare with Digg where total users are concerned with the latter boasting 34.4 million users compared to Twitter’s relatively paltry 4.4 million. Just think of the damage Twitter can do at Digg’s figures.
