For folks who love open-source projects, there is always the DIY Fuzebox 8-bit console kit where you are in charge of both the hardware as well as the software, provided you have a strong command of the C language. In addition, it comes with an emulator to help you test out your games before you let your friends have a go at them. Connectivity options include RCA and S-Video, while a serial port is there to transfer games, and a couple of controller ports will play nice with both NES and SNES controllers. Graphics will be pretty limited with a maximum resolution of 240 x 224 at 256 colors, where storage of games is achieved via SD/MMC. The Fuzebox kit starts from $70 upwards, depending on what you want to have it come with.
