While Intel’s latest GN40 chipset that target Atom processors will be able to offer proper 1080P HD video support in netbooks, it still can’t touch the Blu-ray format since it was not designed to be so, where full Blu-ray capability requires it to process copious amounts of bitrates and where the demands of multi-layer content are significantly higher compared to internet HD content. This rules a Blu-ray drive from netbooks for the moment, and at that small a display, it makes perfect sense as well. After all, the netbook’s battery life is famous for being short, so throwing in a Blu-ray optical drive would be plain nuts.
