AMD 6-Core CPU in June, 12-Core next year and 16-Core in 2016

AMD has announced today that it will introduce a 6-Core Opteron processor in June and has laid out a roadmap that includes a 12-Core CPU in 2010 to finally reach 16-Core by 2016. The upcoming 6-Core Opteron will be named Opteron 6000 Series and will surely have many different versions (frequency). AMD has managed to add two cores without consuming more power – a must in these times of high energy bills. The 6000 Series will be engraved with a 45nm process. For select server applications, this could increase performance (by 30%). (photo from vrzone)
