Scientists in England have successfully developed a new computer which is not only able to read lips but know the difference between languages as well. Apparently, this was made possible by statistically modeling the lip motions of 23 bilingual and trilingual speakers. This allows the computer to identify the language spoken by an individuals with “very high accuracy,” and so far identifiable languages include English, French, German, Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian, Polish and Russian. Sounds like the perfect device for intelligence agencies to pick up what their enemies are planning simply by viewing a surveillance video of them. Will cell phone cameras one day get this feature as well?
