GestureTek Could Revolutionize Remote Control Industry

GestureTek is a company that has been around for a good 20 years or so, and is noted for their motion-control software which has seen action across cell phone games as well as video game console peripherals like the EyeToy for the Sony PlayStation and Webcam for Xbox 360 to date. Hitachi has roped them in to get their expertise by utilizing their software with a depth camera to track movement of the viewers so that these movements will be translate into onscreen commands. If this setup is successful, guess we can kiss goodbye to regular remote controls (although it is always good to keep one as a backup just in case) as well as doing away with the need to hunt for the remote.

Publisher’s note: Let’s hope that the industry comes up with some kind of a gesture standard. If not, it could get messy pretty quickly. Unfortunately, a standard is very unlikely yo happen.
