HP MediaSmart Server LX195 Official Specs

We showed you leaked photos of the upcoming HP MediaSmart Server LX195, but let’s go beyond its good looks to see what type of user is targeted and what this device does. HP’s target is the tech enthusiast who is fairly autonomous, but not quite the network administrator type. Yup, that might be you… (it’s also the a market segment that spends a lot).

On the inside, the LX195 has a single 640GB hard disk by default. If you want to upgrade later, it’s possible, but you will have to copy all your data, replace the hard drive, re-install the system, then copy everything back in. Unfortunately, you will have to re-create all the user accounts and shared directory (ouch). Hopefully, HP will find a better way. We would be tempted to try cloning the partition onto a larger hard drive using Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost. HP has not tested it, but our best guess is that it should work.

The LX195 uses an external power supply and what that means is: less noise. The EX 487 (read review) is very small, but in a quiet environment it is possible to hear the 3 small fans spinning.

From a software/functionality point of view, the MediaSmart Server is similar to the EX 487 as it was before the video & iPhone update. It comes with 1Gb of RAM that is expandable to 4GB, but you should remember that the OS (Windows Home Server) handles only 3GB.

If you want the MediaSmart Server functionalities but don’t care about having multiple internal drives, this should be the lowest cost WHS device with this kind of functionality. HP anticipates a $399 MSRP price.
