What happens when you have a certain level of technical know-how in your head and a first generation iPod nano? Why, call me Ben Kokes and come up with an iPod nano GPS hack, of course. This modification project was made possible courtesy of the nano’s AiR mode that enables the display of 4-color images on the screen from attached hardware, for example, car kits. Ben tinkered around a bit with the serial stream from an aged Alpine unit with AiR functionality before decided on a Nemerix GPS reference board in order to output data to the iPod nano screen. Currently, this mod allows the iPod to display latitude, longitude and the current velocity. Screen updates stand at around 1Hz at press time.
