Under pressure to cut its costs, Toshiba has taken steps to move its handset production outside of Japan. Today, the facility is in Tokyo. Of course, the design will still be done in Japan.
The outsourcing move will save $47M per year and offset for some of the lost sales due to the economic slump. It is part of a larger cost-cutting plan that should save $3B. Phone sales across Japan went down by 30%.
