A couple of companies have come together to release head-mounted displays (HMDs) that are meant for “Augmented Reality (AR)” applications at the recently concluded SID Display Week 2009. AR will apparently enhance human recognition abilities using an array of real-world information and computer-generated data, although it will make you look like a Borg in the process. Both Lumus Ltd. of Israel and Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) of Germany will project images on a transparent screen, making the user see the images as though they’re right smack in front of it in real life. Too bad these HMDs are rather bulky at this point in time until the wonders of miniaturization kicks in.
