LG Licenses ARM CPU and GPU Design for Upcoming Televisions

ARM has announced that it will license its ARM11 MPCore and Arm Mali GPU designs to LG, apparently to improve not only digital TVs’ user interface but also to provide a “full” web 2.0 browsing experience (that means Flash support).

The idea of browsing the web on a big TV might sound only remotely appealing, but what LG (or ARM) don’t mention is that there is a big potential to embed web services like Netflix, Amazon Video or HULU, directly into the TV, without requiring an external box. We are not even talking about things like casual gaming yet.

There is also the possibility of running widgets like Yahoo was demonstrating at CES. Hopefully, they will have a decent connected TV Guide: it is unbelievable that most TVs still don’t have one of those today.
