Samsung Showing Off New AMOLED Panels

Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) aims to forge a new future with its range of AMOLED displays at the SID-2009 Display Week 2009. SMD is currently exhibiting 14.1″ and 31″ diagonal OLED TV panels, where the latter will be the first OLED display in the world that not only boasts full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080), it also comes with a phenomenal contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, a color gamut of more than 100% NTSC, all packaged into an ultra-slim design that measures no more than 8.9mm for outstanding brightness and exceptional image quality. We do hope that these displays will become affordable soonest possible to the masses in order to usher in a new era of flat panel displays.

AMOLED: stands for Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode, is a display technology in which an electro-luminescent organic compound (organic=contains Carbon) is used to light up pixels. Active Matrix refers to a technique to control the pixels and sub-pixels (RGB components) state which was introduced in the mid-70s. Active Matrix is used with many kinds of displays, but the most famous are TFT LCD and AMOLED.

Samsung: Samsung is a South-Korean conglomerate which counts many subsidiaries like Samsung Electronics, which you probably know very well, but also Samsung Heavy Industries which builds ships, or Samsung Life Insurance, Samsung Securities and many more. Samsung is responsible for an amazing 20% of South Korea's exports. In the consumer electronics world, Samsung has gone from being a company with a reputation for cheap products to becoming one of the most respected companies in the world.
