TDK is currently working on a new set of qualification tests of 640GB drive platters which can be crammed into a standard 3.5″ hard drive, allowing one to come up with a four-platter drive which is capable of holding up to 2.5TB of storage space in the near future. These new drives will be mass produced sometime in November onwards, and their effort will ramp up to full speed by the time January rolls around. Apart from that, TDK is also working on 320GB platters that will target 2.5″ hard drives, paving the way for notebook hard drives to achieve a 640GB capacity without piling on the bulk.
