Lenovo has already issued a battery recall ‘service and warranty extension’ of selected ThinkPad models. Symptoms include “irreparable damage” or “battery cannot be charged” error messages being displayed and and having unusually low capacity. If you happen to own machines from the ThinkPad T60, T61, R60, R61, X60 and X61 ranges, you can download a tool that checks if your battery is affected. There is also more information about the issue on that page.
Update 8/17: this was originally labeled a “recall” on Ubergizmo, but Lenovo has contacted us to point out that it’s a ‘service and warranty extension’ for batteries that would exhibit the problems above. “Recall” sounds like a safety issue, and Lenovo says that there is no safety issue here.
