Apple has announced that it will ship Mac OS X Snow Leopard this Friday. A number of applications are switching to 64-bit (they can use tons of memory), and a lot of details have been worked on and improved, but to me, the most interesting features are:
- The native integration of Microsoft Exchange that makes it effectively cheaper for Mac users to use Microsoft Exchange than it is for PC users. It’s ironical.
- OpenCL : Just like Windows 7, new the Mac OSX should use the massive computing power of graphics processors for non graphics purposes. We should expect faster MP3 and video compression at some point, but it’s not clear if these features will be there on Friday.
Finally, the $29 price is pretty sweet, and to me, it is worth it just to get the Exchange support.
