Thanks to Apple’s iPhone, multi-touch has become a household name, and everybody seems to be interested in the technology. It seems that Nokia would like to take things one step further though, as can be seen in Nokia’s patent application. It seems that Nokia is exploring a 3D multi-touch system, which doesn’t only react to your fingers, but also to the amount of pressure which your fingers place on the screen. Coupled with a capacitive touch screen and a few force sensors, it should also be able to know the direction of the force of your finger on the touchscreen, which is pretty nifty. Hopefully we’ll see some real world implementation of this, though don’t expect it to be anytime soon.
