Reports of a Snow Leopard bug that could lead to data loss have surfaced. It is related to the usage of a guest account: normally Snow Leopard deletes all the data of a guest account upon logging out. The problem is that users have reported that data from regular user accounts have been deleted too. Here’s an example of reported issue on Apple’s user forums:
Ok accidentally clicked on “guest account” to log into my mac…was taking a while to log in so i walked away, came back a minute later and i was greeted with my normal login list again, my usual acc, and the guest user, this time i clicked on the correct one and when it started up i now have a VERY simple desktop, std snow leopard desktop (not my normal desktop pic) and cant see any HD. You might want to be careful with that guest account, and hang on to your backups in the meantime…
Update: it looks like this bug was present in Mac OS X before Snow Leopard.
