Ericsson Demos 42Mbps HSPA Network

No matter how fast data transfer speeds go, it seems like we’ll never be satisfied (and rightly so). Now Ericsson has demonstrated its latest mobile broadband technology, HSPA Evolution, which will sport drool-worthy speeds of almost 42Mbps. In a demonstration near Stockholm , a download speed of 41.5Mbps was achieved, which is a first on a chipset made from commercially available products. Of course, don’t expect to get such speeds in real world performance, since we’ll have to take into account congestion and other factors, but it’s still nice to know that we’re moving forward, right? This new “dual carrier” technology will require a software upgrade, but doubles the speed for users everywhere in the mobile network, allowing operators to deliver more data per base station.

HSPA+ is also known as Evolved High-Speed Packet Access. It is a mobile broadband protocol that was defined by the 3GPP standard, release 7. In Theory, the HSPA+ data rate can go up to 84 Mbps (Megabits per second) downstream (to the mobile), and 22Mbps upstream (back to the tower). These numbers are achieved by using multiple streams, so they should be considered theoretical and peak performance numbers. The HSPA+ specifications support up to 168Mbps of theoretical peak rate. Although many HSPA+ carriers call it 4G, it is very different from 4G LTE
