ATR (Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute) is currently collaborating with Hitachi, Toshiba, NEC, NTT and Mitsubishi, where this alliance is collectively known as Network Robot Forum, with the aim of developing an assisted living platform which uses a network of robots to function in tandem in order to achieve what a solitary robot can’t. Great, first they gain consciousness, now they have a collective Zerg mindset? Guess humanity will be doomed by then, unless the proper failsafes are included. For those with a less fatalistic attitude, this network of robots will offer a kind of augmented reality experience when deployed at shopping malls. Say that you shoot a photo of a device via your cellphone camera, it will then retrieve information about said device while creating shopping lists of where you can purchase one.
